The bones and bone marrow of the human body are made up of living cells that need a constant supply of blood to remain healthy. If blood flow to these bone cells is greatly reduced, the cells may die, causing the bone to collapse. This process is called osteonecrosis. Osteonecrosis can cause pain, arthritis, and limited use of the affected joints. Some people may need joint replacement surgery.
